OH MY GOSH!!! Frank Peretti’s book Illusion is amazing! It took me a bit to get into it, but once I did, I couldn’t put it down.
Peretti is just as good a writer as my all-time favorite author, Ted Dekker. They share a similar story telling ability. You can always expect a great twist you don’t see coming, excellent descriptions and fresh, intriguing ideas presented.
Illusion doesn’t disappoint. It made me cry, laugh and feel.
Here’s the plot in a nutshell. Dane and Mandy have been a popular magic act together for forty years, but a tragic accident takes the life of Mandy, leaving Dane alone and lost. But is Mandy really dead?
Mandy mysteriously finds herself back in 1970 when she was a nineteen year old girl. Dazed and unsure of her past, present and future, Mandy is immediately assumed to be a psycho and is taken to a mental ward. It’s there that she discovers her uncanny ability to travel through time and escapes.
Having discovered this ability, Mandy decides to use it to make some money as a magician. She gets a job at a coffee place and performs for the people everyday at a particular time. Her popularity grows as she performs what seems like impossible tricks.
Meanwhile, Dane is searching for some fresh new talent now that he no longer has a partner to perform magic with. His friend convinces him to check out the new girl in town who can do some awesome magic tricks. Dane goes to the coffee shop not expecting to be wowed by a young kid performing tricks not even he can figure out. He most certainly doesn’t expect to find a young woman that looks exactly like his wife did when she was a teenager. It startles him and immediately draws him to this mysterious girl.
Mandy can’t figure out why she is also drawn to Dane the moment she sees him in the crowd of people at the coffee shop. She has no idea who he is, but there’s something about him…
As time goes on, Dane takes Mandy on as his protege, teaching her how to take her act to the next level. Unbeknownst to either of them, there are some crazy secrets behind Mandy’s past. Her life is being controlled by someone who knows the secret behind her powers, someone who is watching her every move and recording it all.
Who is this Mandy? Can she really be Dane’s dead wife? How is she able to perform such impossible things and travel through time? These questions and more will be answered as the story culminates in one satisfyingly stunning ending.
Don’t miss out on this romantic, astounding thriller that’s pretty edge-of-your-seat exciting. It’s truly another great surprise of a novel by the phenomenal Frank Peretti.
AND–I’ve been wanting to read THIS one for a while, too!
